Background
HIV and AIDS have been declared as a worldwide threatening for the nation development. AIDS reduces the life expectancy and economic potential, increasing the vulnerability of future generation by creating millions of orphans, and diminishing the capacity of public and private sectors (UNAIDS). Nowadays, over 20 million people are now living with HIV, almost a half of them are in productive age. Although its impact has been devastating across sub-Saharan Africa, the disease is also rapidly spreading to Asia.
Due to the high stigmatization, HIV and AIDS cannot be treated as any other diseases. Many efforts have been done, but the spread of the disease is still happening, not only among the risk population but also among non risk population such as mothers and children. To slow down the spreading of HIV and AIDS, young people must understand the nature of the disease, what have been done to reduce HIV spreading and how to prevent HIV, so they can be a part of its solution and not be a part of the burden.
General Objectives
The aim of this course is to disseminate information on HIV and AIDS among young generation to response against the epidemic. The general objectives of the course are:
- The participants will understand the history of the disease and familiar with the concept related to HIV and AIDS
- The participants will develop a compassionate attitude in looking toward the problems of persons living with HIV and AIDS
- The participants can contribute to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS among young people
Course Design
The course will be conducted using teleconference method. Four countries will be involves in this course, i.e. Malaysia, Philippines, Timor Leste and Indonesia, with University of Indonesia as a host. The course will also be broadcasted to other universities in Indonesia which are linked with GDLN.
The course consists of seven meetings. Two sessions of teleconference will be conducted for each meeting. Prominent experts will be invited to give lectures for each session. Each session consist of 45 background image minutes tele-presentation followed by 15 minutes tele-discussion. For the University of Indonesia’s students the session will be followed by an offline discussion to enrich the topics.
The course will cover five key aspects link to HIV and AIDS, such as:
- Basic information on HIV and AIDS (2 sessions)
- Review of Current HIV and AIDS Situation (2 sessions)
- HIV and AIDS Prevention (3 sessions)
- Economic and Psycho-social Impact of HIV and AIDS (3 sessions)
- HIV/AIDS Some Perspectives and Issues (3 sessions)
The last session will be a Summary Sessions and Synthesis. Examination for University of Indonesia’s students can be taken on line within two weeks after the course ended.

Duration
16 April – 4 June 2009 (7 weeks). A block system will be used in conducting the course. Each week on Thursday at 8.00- 12.00 the participants should attend the meeting.
Note: on 21st of May there will be a national holiday in Indonesia, so there will be no course.

Requirement
Since this course will be conducted in English, a good command of English language is required, to enroll this course. Ability to communicate in English is important to participate in the discussion.
Cost
NO TUITION FEE will be charged to enroll this course. In this academic year, this course is supported by UNESCO – Jakarta.
Credits
For University of Indonesia’s students, this course can be transferred as 2 credits election course, with minimum attendance 10 sessions and passed the examination within two weeks.
Participants who do not apply for credits can receive certificate of achievement, with minimum attendance 10 sessions and passed the examination within two weeks.
Procedure
University of Indonesia’s students should enroll via the SIAK-NG system (contact Nelasari/Sintawati at 021-787 4265). Since the teleconference room capacity is only for 30 persons, the first 30 enrolled students will be prioritized. Students from University of Indonesia who enrolled for credits, must pass the examination within two weeks after the end of the course. Failure to finish the exam in due time, will cause an E grade. To pass the course the students should get at least C grade.
